Our international work at Light a Single Candle Foundation is focused in seven Central American & Caribbean countries – Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti & Jamaica.
We are always looking to identify new organizations that we can partner with and make impactful change.
Eligibility
- The recipient organization must be a not-for-profit USA based 501 (c) (3) public charity as defined by the Internal Revenue Service code.
- Projects to be considered must be located within the following countries: Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica & Nicaragua.
- The recipient organization must have staff and/or partners on the ground and include the local community in the project development and implementation.
* Organizations we do not fund: Light a Single Candle Foundation does not fund schools, churches, healthcare entities & initiatives, government, or government agencies, for profit organizations, individuals, or any non-501(c)3 USA based charitable organization.
Here is what kind of proposals we would love to see:
Economic Sustainability
Sustainable income development-based initiatives that address poverty, increase income, teach skills, provide training, and create individual, family and community economic opportunities.
This may include:
- Agricultural income development projects
- Animal husbandry income development projects
- Improvement of supply chain & market access development
- Value-added post-production initiatives
Food Security & NutritionThis may include:

Education, Community Training and/or Skill BuildingDevelopment of individuals, families, and communities toward self-determination and an improved standard of living.

Community Transformation
The Community Transformation objective aims to significantly impact a single community across multiple sectors, which may include:
- Leadership Development
- Water & Sanitation
- Food Security & Nutrition
- Education, Community Training and/or Skill Building
- Housing
- Income Development
These initiatives typically extend for five years or more, involving physical and capital inputs, with an additional five years dedicated to impact measurement.
Letter of Inquiry
All partners interested in introducing themselves to Light a Single Candle are asked to submit a Letter of Inquiry. This brief introduction should describe your organization, the scope of your work, and your reason for reaching out to us. This initial step is essential for registration within our potential application system.
After review of this submission, we will be contact you regarding any next steps within approximately 10 business days.
Grants Process
If you are an established partner of Light a Single Candle Foundation, please contact our Program Officer for your access code.
Deadlines
Light a Single Candle has both a monthly and quarterly review process, dependent upon the size and scope of the proposal. Prospective grants may be submitted at any time. However, larger, more complex proposals should follow the quarterly deadline schedule noted below:
January 6, 2024 – These proposals will be reviewed in February.
March 30, 2024 – These proposals will be reviewed in May.
June 29, 2024 – These proposals will be reviewed in August.
October 5, 2024 – These proposals will be reviewed in November.
