Light a Single Candle Foundation (LASC) is honored to continue our partnership with Cross Catholic Outreach in their efforts to bring hope through community development and the love of Christ to some of the most poverty-stricken areas of the world. This year, we worked with Cross Catholic Outreach on a total of seven projects in Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic, serving countless beneficiaries:
Community Transformation:
Amigos for Christ: Nicaragua Plan 7 Year 5 – This is the 5th year of funding for a Community Transformation project in Nicaragua aimed at sustainable growth in rural communities focused on accomplishing community ownership, water and sanitation, improved health and well-being, improved educational attendance, and income development. Three communities graduated in 2022 from the Community Transformation program – Miguel Cristiano, San Marcos de las Pilas, and Valle los Morenos.
Amigos for Christ: One Manzana Year 3 – This is the third year of the One Manzana Program supporting the income development of 86 beneficiary families in Nicaragua and promoting the sustainability of the farms that are either owned or operated by those farmers. The 1 Manzana Project is focused on creating small organic farms that produce $3,000 net income by year 6, create 1.5 jobs per manzana, and allow participants to have zero debt after three years.
Fundasep: Community Transformation Program Year 3 – This is the third year of funding for Fundasep’s Community Transformation project in El Helechal, El Palero and Los Auqueyes that focuses on water and agriculture, microcredit programing, housing, and education for 131 beneficiary families in the Dominican Republic. In 2022, this project aimed to train 30 community leaders, install water in all 3 communities, increase agricultural production and form 15 microcredit groups.
Other Relief & Recovery Projects:
Amigos for Christ: Water for Chinandega Year 2 – This is the second year of support for Water for Chinandega that will help provide clean water to 1,110 families in Nicaragua through the installation of a deep well, storage tank, pumping system, and a network of water pipe that delivers clean water to every home. Furthermore, they aim to construct 280 modern bathrooms for families in need to reduce the diseases caused by lack of clean water and poor sanitation.
El Carmelo: Food and Family Empowerment – This funding supported the ongoing needs of 150 families for food distribution, mental health services and childcare for impoverished families and children from the local community in Guatemala.
Fundacion Nueva Alegria: New Hope for the Youth of Fundacion Nueva – This funding allowed the vocational training and financial management programming for 150 youth in the Dominican Republic to resume. This program includes training for barber shop, artisan crafts, baking and culinary arts, electrical, plumbing, and martial arts.
Las Mercedes Nutrition Center – This funding helped to supplement the food and salary cost for the 3 Las Mercedes Nutrition Centers in Honduras where they will provide food for 200 children and nutritional rehabilitation for 40 children who live there full-time.
