Haiti Rural Women’s Farming Program

November 29, 2018 by LightACandle

Creating Hope Through Home Agriculture in Haiti

Light a Single Candle has partnered with Cross Catholic Outreach in a unique opportunity to bring relief to suffering people in rural, impoverished Haiti. With ongoing support, desperately poor beneficiaries are learning how to plant and tend home gardens using sustainable agricultural methods. Families without enough food to eat are beginning to grow their own food season after season, ending malnutrition and earning money for their children’s schooling.

November 28, 2018 by LightACandle

Providing Long-Term Sustainable Communities in Nicaragua

Light a Single Candle is partnering with Cross Catholic Outreach and Amigos for Christ to provide funding for a development model in 22 rural communities. The focus of this model is a 7-year partnership that generates long-term, sustainable growth in each community. This represents Light a Single Candle’s first Whole Community Partnership. Plan 7 is broken down into 5 major goals to be accomplished over the course of 7 years:

Goal 1: Leadership – The community leads, owns and operates every project.
Goal 2: Water & Sanitation – Clean water is available 24/7, and a septic system exists with a modern bathroom in every home.
Goal 3: Health – Each year, reduce the cases of intestinal parasites, kidney disease, and respiratory disease by 10%.
Goal 4: Education – 100% of children ages 5-17 attend school.
Goal 5: Economic Development – Family income will grow to $15 per day.

San Agustin Community Development Project

November 27, 2018 by LightACandle

Creating a Sense of Community by Providing Safe Shelter and Clean Water for the Poor

Light a Single Candle, Cross International, and Rainbow Network have partnered together to build houses with latrines and install a water system in the Nicaraguan village of San Agustin. 25 Nicaraguan families now have safe, sturdy new homes and access to clean, abundant water. These homes were transferred to the families in a joyous ceremony filled with music and dancing. Each family was presented with a Spanish-language Bible, a housewarming gift, and the key to their home — which for many families was the first key they have ever owned.

In addition to chicken coops, layers, broilers and all the needed equipment, a goat enclosure was built and goats were provided, as well as 6 cows and 1 bull. An apiculture component was also provided, with 6 beehives and all the necessary equipment and training. The children joined in and helped to plant Moringa trees. San Fernando, Honduras Cocoa Project

November 8, 2018 by LightACandle

Enhancing the facilities at San Fernando, Honduras to increase its profitability of quality cocoa as well as the livelihood of local farmers.

Light a Single Candle partnered with Food for the Poor on this project, providing processing stations to allow the Cooperative de Cacaeros San Fernando to produce a better-quality cocoa that will be more marketable. The addition of the production areas is improving the livelihoods of 170 cocoa farming families, and is helping meet the increasing international demand for fine cocoa. The San Fernando Cocoa Project has more than tripled their earnings! Prior to this project, the cooperative would sell approximately 26 tons of Quality A in an entire year; however, now, they are producing that in three months.
